Travel blogs are like diaries. Adventurous women are transforming themselves into solo travellers and are doing it with great passion and dedication. While travelling or after completing the trip, they come back home, and while sipping cold coffee, they write their travel blogs. Sounds so much fun!
If you are one of those women who is planning to travel places and create a travel blog for yourself, you are at the right place.
For creating a blog, in general, I wrote an article which you can read here.
It has the procedure of creating a blog explained step-by-step.
Now, steps look easy enough. But, I want to emphasize on those parts of the process where you should invest some of your precious time. Ready?
Naming your travel blog
Ask yourself, “What should be the name of my travel blog?” You’ll tell me, “What’s in a name?”
But, lady, I’ll tell you what’s in it. You cannot have a name that tells the story of an architect. Yours is going to be a travel blog. It should tell the story of a traveller, specifically, a woman traveller. By the way, you can keep any domain name. Just remember that it should be short and catchy. It should stick to one’s mind. The plus point for keeping it close to your niche i.e. travelling will help you in terms of search engine optimization.
Most importantly, this domain name should be available, whatever it is.
Now, after selecting the name of your blog and checking its availability, you have to register the domain and buy a hosting service for your blog.
Look and Feel of the blog: Design
Then, you should think about the design of your blog. It is a very important factor for your travel blog.Travel is about fun, adventure, colors, happiness, excitement, and self-love. All this should show on the design of your travel blog. You can have a look at the best travel blogs by women here. This is just for design inspiration, you can have even beautiful designs.
If you don’t have a nice budget for the themes, then go for free options like BlogSpot, Squarespace etc. Even if you’re going for WordPress, choose free themes. I’m saying this because it’s very important to get started first and add some content to your blog. You can play with the premium themes later once you’re all set on the travel blog grounds with a follower audience after some months. It’s a personal advice.
Free WordPress themes are good, but there are some limitations that after reaching a stage in some months, you’ll say to yourself, “I’ll buy a nice premium theme today.” You cannot customize the free themes much to your will. You can just move to themeforest.net and look for free WordPress themes fit for travel blogs, so that you can decide it for yourself without any bias. I’m suggesting ThemeForest because it has got a huge list of beautifully designed highly customizable WordPress themes – Free and Premium.
Premium WordPress themes are truly customizable. You can make them look just like you imagined your travel blog to be. The designs look professional and equip you with handy options to make your blog look even beautiful according to your requirement.
Add important pages to your blog
When your blog is created and ready to publish your content, just before that make sure that all your important pages are up and running with relevant content and images and also the links. Pages are different than posts. Pages will remain visible to the audience so the content on the pages should be kept updated all the time. Some important pages for a travel blog would be:
About: You can write about the reason behind the existence of this blog. Answer questions like – Why you created this blog? What are your plans for future i.e. What do you aim for through this blog?
Contact: This page can either state your email id, or contact form (by using the plugin called Gravity Forms), or both. But, if you’re giving away your email id, do specify the purposes people can reach you.
Places I’ve been to: This can be an interesting section with photos and your next target destination this year.
Products/Services: If you’ve got nice souvenirs from different places, if you’ve got travel related products and services to sell, you can have a separate page for selling. It will look professional.
Flights (optional): I’ve seen some professional travel bloggers have a page for flights as well. They’ll tell you the cheapest and best flights to particular locations.
Tip: On the sidebar, you should have a little bio about yourself. You can make it as fun and exciting as you want to sound.
Privacy and Copyright page will show that you are a pro. You should have it to build trust.
What content should I post?
You’re free to write anything on your travel blog that sounds true to the niche, of course. Here are some ideas that you can use while posting content on your travel blog:
1. Top 5 places to visit in [country/place name]
2. Top 5 food items to try without fail in [country/place name]
3. How to start a conversation with people in [country/place name]
4. [country/place name] reviews
5. Personal experiences with particular people in [country/place name]
6. Travel tips for visiting [country/place name]
7. 5 mistakes to avoid while travelling to [country/place name]
These are just 7, and you can evolve them as and when your blog will grow.
