Hi Nidhi, thank you for agreeing to this interview. We’re so excited to know about you and to tell all our readers about the amazing you.
I’d start with a weird question, as always. Are you married?
Hahaha… no prize for guessing this one 😀
Married and have two brats (9 and 7)!
Oh! It doesn’t really look like. How are you so fit, stylish and yet family-oriented?
Really… Am I?
Well, being fit is what I always dreamt of since childhood, without having any clue about how to make that happen! But eventually in early 30s I finally found my calling, when I turned my passion into my profession and turned poison into medicine. (Battled obesity in my own life and now I help people suffering with obesity and related diseases)
And family is where the heart is… so that gets most of my time, priority and love 🙂
Alright! What were you doing ten years back?
Ten years back…. Well, we are talking about 2005-2006!! I was a part of the mad corporate race then, moving from Operations to Project Management to Client Relationship and trying to prove myself day in and day out! I had a very successful and satisfying corporate career for 12 years!
What created that sudden interest in the field of nutrition and diet? How did it all happen?
My long cherished dream of being slim followed by my struggle to lose weight, my umpteen rounds of talking to the slimming chains to help me get there! Eventually it dawned on me that no slimming chain can help me or anyone for that matter till I help myself with clean eating and maintaining a routine. I lost one part of me in 7 months post my second delivery (lot of weight… I meant)
And that’s where it all started!!! My own journey became a game changer for my life… Intensive study about the subject and then courses on Nutrition and Dietetics and Food Science, counseling!! I still continue to upgrade my knowledge as dietetics is a relatively new and a dynamic field.
Today, I am helping 100s of people to become healthy, lose weight, get out of hormonal imbalances, become more positive and confident about them and become happier than ever. 🙂
That smile on people’s face makes this career shift truly worthwhile.
How does your family (husband and kids) support you in your work?
My family has been my biggest support!! My husband’s support made me efficient in both the worlds. He made me realize how my role of a health coach was helping so many people become happy! He gave me freedom to choose my timings, helped me design my business… He even agrees to work from home (once in a while ;)) if it’s really needed to support me.
My kids though are brats but my biggest blessings, they tell me “Ma’ma you teach us cooking and we will help you while you rest for some time”
Wow! That’s so sweet.. So tell us a little about your ambitions for this journey towards good nutrition for all?
Well, my ambition for this journey is to really reach out to as many people as I can to create awareness about the importance of Eating Right and Wise! Reaching the optimum weight and staying healthy become byproducts of this.
What do you think is stopping us from having a healthy body?
There are multiple things that have landed us with unhealthy status:
- The media coverage and hype about the fast food chains along with the low price deal that they offer to make it irresistible for people
- Food for comfort and not really for nourishment… so the culture of rewarding people with so called good food (junk food in the real sense) when they do something great
- Food for convenience… People find cooking a time wasting effort now days whereas it can really be a family time
- Our sedentary life style
- And last but not the least, poor awareness about food and nutrition
When you started your career in this field, what were the main difficulties?
The culture of people going to a professional dietician to get guidance on what they eat was not prevalent. There were many “I know all” type of people who would try to self manage their eating habits. Slimming centers or gyms were the only other popular options for people who wanted to spend for being healthy. To offer something different and make people realize the importance of following the right diet, through professional help was challenging initially.
However, my passion as a Nutritionist was too strong, coupled with compassion for people who were struggling due to obesity was strong as well… Perhaps No difficulty looked like big enough as I had been on the other side too and I exactly knew how people feel about their body!
Where did you get inspiration from to take such an empowering step?
Having seen the actual proof on my own body of the effects of following “eat right and eat wise” approach, I was inspired to take this to a completely new level. Passionately acquiring knowledge through various courses was the natural next step. Self belief and support from family empowered me to take decisive steps during this journey. I am glad I started this journey of helping people; I am truly enjoying every bit of it.
Do you have any kind of online presence other than your personal social media accounts?
When you are out on a holiday with friends or family, do you still manage to maintain that diet you follow on other days? If yes, how?
Well I eat everything but I am just mindful of my quantities. So the idea is to eat everything to enjoy and relish but not overeat. 🙂
What are your thoughts on the working women who completely leave their jobs, just to take care of their families? Do you feel it’s alright or not to do so for a 21st century woman?
Well, it’s a choice that an individual makes given their personal circumstances. I have seen ladies turning entrepreneur post quitting their jobs, I have seen ladies resuming their careers after 5-10 long years, I have also seen ladies who bid adieu to their career completely and are happy.
The key is to be happy whether corporate, entrepreneur, homemaker, community helper… take your pick.
What is one question nobody has ever asked you—that you wish they asked you?
I think, I have been asked all kind of questions. 🙂
And I have been brutally honest about all the questions asked.
Can you tell something about what will be your next big undertaking?
I plan to write a book on Nutrition as my next step!
What advice would you give to the people who just got inspired during this interview?
I will be pleased to know that my answers could inspire few people… My only advice is not to do anything out of fear as it will never bring about true happiness and satisfaction… Follow your passion and your work will take you places!!
Is there anything else you would like to add that I haven’t included?
Well you have included more than I could even think 😉
Thank you very much for taking the time out of your busy schedule to take part in this interview.
