Self doubt can creep up anywhere in your life at any stage. We’re talking about starting your own startup, but this will be useful for anybody reading this. If you need self help books and positive thinking books, I’ve listed some good ones at the end of this article with their links to buy. Take care!
Let’s accept the fact with the whole consciousness that starting up on your own is a tedious job that you’ve taken. A lot of happy and sad moments come your way, specifically, the highs and the lows. The only things that can make you happy in the beginning are mostly cheap and tasty food and occasional meetings with old friends. 🙂
If these are not there, trust me, it’s really hard to make you happy. Because your work won’t give you happiness, although you’ll work days and nights straight, these little things will try their best to compensate.
Obviously, you entered the startup world to do something great, out-of-the-box probably, but somewhere you also wanted to feel free and be happy working for yourself. Now, this expectation to be happy for nothing has grown so huge that you suddenly can’t handle the situations that are not giving you that expected happiness.
Chill, it works like that.
“But, what is the way out?”, you’d ask. Definitely when things don’t work, or just doesn’t seem to work, when you are having unrealistic expectations from yourself and people around, when you feel that everyone should like your work and the product you’re working on, or when you expect customers to come in for your product and directly buy it, you are highly likely to get disheartened.
This creates self doubt which can hamper your productivity and your product eventually. There are a lot of ways you can handle self doubt. When there are just one to three people working together in a startup, many times all of them start doubting themselves and everything. They lack mental peace and a good advisor. That’s what’s the situation even I faced.

I used to feel wrong all the time and then I decided that being like this won’t help me in any way. I feel wrong even today, but I now handle this situation in a better way.
I’ve listed 3 ways which worked on me quite well to handle self-doubt.
1. Stop blaming others and yourself
I know how it feels when nothing works out and you start doubting yourself. As a human behavior, you tend to blame others around you. Even if someone is distantly related to your work, you try this out on everyone you can. At the end, you just blame yourself and start eating yourself up from the inside. No lady! Don’t do that. When you blame yourself or anybody else, you’re just losing time and creating negative energy around you.

So, what you should do right now if you’re working on your startup?
Stop blaming, instead look out for problems that are creating this quaky mindset inside you. List out the problems and deal with them one-by-one. It’s not late now, but it will be late if you keep on thinking devastatingly like this.
2. Create a timeline and follow with your heart
You know what is important for you and your startup right now. Maybe you are not in the mood as of now. I’ve read a lot of times that people who get affected by mood and stop working are losers. Let me tell you, that’s not true.
People write it that way because that’s what written everywhere on the internet.
If there’s something bothering you, go out and breathe in some fresh air, change your surrounding, talk to a friend, have an ice cream – do something that changes how you’re feeling right now.
Then, do this: take your notepad out or wherever you take down notes and start writing what you want to do in this startup business. Break it down into tasks and assign a clear timeline for it. This should be achievable and should not let you down.
This is a great way to tell yourself that you are great and there’s no place for self-doubt in your life.
But, this can creep up again, but now you know what to do, right?!
3. Distract yourself
If the feeling of self-doubt is really strong, don’t think about it now. Maybe you feel like crying and shouting. This is what you have to do –
Take a bath and ready yourself with nice clothes and a little hairdo
Go to the supermarket and spend at least half an hour (and scan every item of your interest)
Go to a clothing brand store and pick some 4-5 dresses you like. Try them on, click pictures and come back.
I’m not asking you to spend money, just spend some time with yourself, calm down, and get back to work with better focus. There can be so many other ways to distract yourself from work completely. Share your ideas in the comments below, I’d love to try them next time I’m in such a situation.
Self-doubt in any stage while starting your startup, can ruin everything. These tips and tricks can help you out if you seriously apply them because these have worked on me and so many people I know as friends and colleagues.
If you found this article helpful, share it with people you know need help. It’ll be a help for me if I’ll be able to reach out to them in any way. Thanks a lot in advance.
