I wasn’t much of an avid reader ever, I am not still but I do read. If not a lot, then at least informative pieces of articles or short stories or new articles and any such thing which talks about any random thing. Earlier I had a strange perception that if I read then I will not be a writer with a brain of my own but eventually I realized that writing is nothing but a remixed version of whatever you read to seek inspiration from so I pledged to read more and more now.
How reading helps you? Well here are a few reasons why writers should read:
Reading inspires you
Writing is a way of reciting your feelings and reading helps you learn different of ways of penning down those feelings. When you read you unconsciously imbibe the grammar and the mannerisms of writing.
It doesn’t let you fall short of words
When you read, you also learn uncountable ways to express yourself. This comes in handy when you yourself are writing, you tend to implement all those ways to give out meaning to your thoughts on paper. Moreover, reading improves a writer’s vocabulary. A novel or a beautifully constructed article is capable enough to enhance your efficiency with words.
The more you analyse, the more you learn
Whenever you read a book, it is bound to be based on a theme. The slow treading of the plot helps you analyse every character, situation and the theme. This analysis awakens the thinker in you and this thinker in you makes you a better writer.
Never mimic the writers
Seeking inspiration does not mean stealing your favorite author’s ways. Don’t be the Bollywood to your Hollywood (they justify copied scripts by calling them inspired). Create your own ways of writing, take the things you discover while reading and implement them with the twist of your own ways, the way Vikas Khanna (I love him) adds the twist to the dishes he learns. 😀
Start loving Reading
Some of us (including me) take reading as a task and that is why we are hopeless at it. Don’t read because you have been advised to read, that will make it boring. Instead, read just because you found a nice piece of content which deserves your attention and time. Reading a good novel or anything good will unconsciously educate you. Anything that involves you and makes you imagine while you read has the potential to nurture the writer within you. Once you make it a habit to read, it will start doing wonders to your writing skills.
While doing my homework to write this article I took a pledge that no wonder what I WILL start reading. So whenever you start falling short of words and writing becomes painful, instead of dragging through words will be visible in your writings take an escape to the world of fantasy called reading.
